Deception

The elderly with dementia may be prone to being misled by robotic companions. For example, the companion robot PARO, which is focused on improving the health & well-being of the user, may deceive the user into believing that they have an illusory relationship with PARO. As a result, the elderly may forsake their real-life interactions with others in order to devote their attention and emotions to the robot. Dementia patients may grow nervous and concerned about the robot, giving them the misleading impression that it cares and understands them. This may lead to a decline in human interaction with friends, family, and caregivers, as some may assume that the robot is meeting the elderly person's social needs, hence lowering the amount of time they spend with them.
